Nuro has officially been granted a driverless testing permit for its state-of-the-art autonomous technology, a significant milestone ahead of Uber's anticipated robotaxi service launch.
The California Department of Motor Vehicles confirmed on Tuesday that it has expanded Nuro’s existing driverless permit to encompass the deployment of Lucid Gravity SUVs. These vehicles, outfitted with Nuro's advanced autonomous systems, represent a shift in the startup's strategy to focus on partnerships instead of the low-speed delivery vehicles it initially emphasized.
Despite securing the new permit, which allows Nuro to conduct testing without a human safety operator in the vehicle, the Silicon Valley-based firm has indicated that it is not ready to commence testing just yet. A spokesperson for Nuro, David Salguero, noted that while the company is eager to advance, specific timelines for the commencement of driverless testing remain under wraps.
The approval from the DMV comes as both Nuro and Uber navigate the complex landscape of regulatory requirements. In addition to this permit, Nuro is expected to secure a driverless ride-hailing permit from the California Public Utilities Commission, alongside a deployment authorization from the DMV before Uber's premium robotaxi service can officially begin.
Expanding Testing Horizons
Currently, testing has been expanded to include Uber employees, who can request autonomous rides using the Uber app. However, these rides still require a human safety operator to be present in the vehicle. It is a crucial step in ensuring the safety and reliability of the technology before it can scale to the general public.
Investment and Development Trajectory
In a guarantee of its commitment to this venture, Uber has amplified its investment in Lucid, increasing its stake from $300 million to $500 million. The revised agreement includes a significant order for 35,000 Lucid Gravity vehicles, designed specifically for robotaxi operations. These vehicles will integrate Nuro’s autonomous driving technology, powered by Nvidia’s cutting-edge Drive AGX Thor computing platform.
As Lucid continues to deliver engineering vehicles, the collaboration between these three tech giants is paving the way for a future defined by autonomous mobility. The vehicle’s advanced technology incorporates high-resolution cameras, solid-state lidar, and radar systems, ensuring comprehensive situational awareness in diverse driving environments.
Despite regulatory hurdles that remain, Lucid’s executives maintain a cautiously optimistic outlook, asserting that they are on track to launch commercial robotaxi services by late 2026.
