In a game-changing development for gamers, accessories-maker Mechanism is set to release its innovative Basegrip accessory on the same day Valve's new Steam Controller hits the market. This uniquely designed apparatus not only allows users to seamlessly attach the Steam Controller to mobile devices, but it also opens the door for a broader range of compatibility with various handheld setups.
The Valve Steam Controller will be available for purchase starting Monday at a price point of $99, and for those eager to enhance their gaming experience, Mechanism’s Basegrip promises to be an essential companion. Capable of securing the controller to smartphones, as well as various mounts designed for other handheld devices, this accessory caters to the increasing demand for versatile gaming solutions.
Mechanism has disclosed that the introduction of the Basegrip coincides with Valve’s early access to the controller's design, ensuring that gamers can fully exploit the accessory’s potential from day one. Paired with a dedicated phone mount, gamers can utilize the Steam Link streaming app to control their PCs, though users should be aware that full compatibility across all iOS and Android devices is still pending.
“The controller doesn’t work across all of iOS or Android yet,” Mechanism cautions, noting there may be limitations. In early tests, issues arose particularly on iOS devices, suggesting that while the Steam Controller can provide a unique mobile gaming experience, it is not yet the definitive solution.
In addition to the Basegrip, Mechanism is curating a collection of accessories, including a waiting list for a forthcoming Steam Controller dock. This dock, designed to elevate the controller for optimal charging and display, is said to be “perfectly weighted” for enhanced usability and aesthetic appeal.
As part of its commitment to accessibility and user innovation, Mechanism will also offer free files for 3D printing versions of the Basegrip and a simplified dock. This will enable users to create personalized adaptations of the accessory, reflecting the brand's ethos of fostering a collaborative gaming community.
Past collaborations between Mechanism and Valve have set the stage for technological creativity, with the company’s previous mounts having been integral in the formation of Valve’s now-iconic Steam Deck exhibition in their lobby.
With the Steam Controller launch just around the corner, the race to define mobile gaming potential is heating up, and Mechanism appears poised to lead the way in this exciting new chapter of gaming evolution.
