As patients navigate an often frustrating maze of healthcare bureaucracy, the struggle to connect with specialists has become a significant barrier to timely treatment. Basata, a Phoenix-based startup, is at the forefront of revolutionizing this process by leveraging artificial intelligence to convert tedious administrative tasks into manageable solutions.
With nearly one in five adults experiencing difficulty obtaining necessary healthcare, the disconnect between primary care doctors and specialists highlights a pressing issue. Basata was founded by Kaled Alhanafi and Chetan Patel, both of whom encountered the challenges of this care gap in their personal and professional lives. While working in the tech industry, Alhanafi was forced to navigate a complex referral system when his father was referred to three cardiology groups, only to hear back from one weeks later. Meanwhile, Patel’s experience with his wife’s medical emergency made it clear that the administrative burden was delaying critical care.
Automation Meets Healthcare
In a sector where delays in specialist consultations can be detrimental, Basata harnesses AI technology to streamline the referral process. The system efficiently reads and processes incoming referrals—often still received by fax—and quickly connects patients with specialists. By employing automated voice agents to reach out directly to patients, Basata dramatically reduces wait times, often setting up appointments before the patient has left their primary care doctor's parking lot.
“We have the best doctors, and we have some of the best medicines, but the care gap is just so wide,” Patel remarked, emphasizing the urgent need for reform in how patients access specialty care.

Building a Patient-Centric Model
The company has strategically focused on specific specialties, such as cardiology and urology, ensuring their technology integrates seamlessly with existing electronic medical records systems used in these fields. Basata's revenue model is designed with sustainability in mind, charging practices based on document processed and calls made, rather than per seat, thus fostering a more scalable solution.
Despite interest from various specialties, Basata is proceeding cautiously, recently rejecting a significant contract that could potentially overextend their capabilities before thoroughly understanding the specialty's needs.
Investing in the Future of Healthcare
Having processed referrals for approximately 500,000 patients to date—100,000 in just the past month—Basata's growth trajectory reflects the pressing demand for innovative solutions in healthcare. The company has secured $24.5 million in funding, including a recent $21 million Series A round led by Lan Xuezhao from Basis Set Ventures and also backed by notable investors such as Aileen Lee of Cowboy Ventures.
While the space becomes increasingly competitive, with other startups like Tennr raising significant capital to develop similar solutions, Basata remains focused on bridging the care gap and enhancing access to vital healthcare services. As the healthcare landscape continues to evolve, companies like Basata will play a pivotal role in transforming how patients connect with specialized care.
