Tina Daheley, the esteemed newsreader of BBC Radio 2's popular breakfast show, has confirmed her exit just weeks before Sara Cox assumes hosting duties on July 6. After nearly two decades of delivering the morning news, Daheley's departure marks a significant shift in the show's dynamic.

In a heartfelt announcement made live on air, Daheley described her time spent on Radio 2 as one of the "greatest privileges" of her life. "It’s been incredibly humbling to wake up with you every morning, trusted to deliver the news on Europe’s leading breakfast show," she reflected, as she prepared to relinquish her early morning alarm calls after seven years with Zoe Ball, Scott Mills, and others.

Daheley, who first joined the BBC in 2007 and has been a familiar voice on 1Xtra and Radio 1, will not be departing the network entirely. She plans to continue contributing by standing in for Jeremy Vine during his lunchtime broadcasts.

Announcing her decision on Instagram, Daheley noted the beginning of her career in radio, reminiscing about her tenure on Trevor Nelson's breakfast show, which was the catalyst for her illustrious path in broadcasting. "After 18 years of waking up early, I’m looking forward to a lie-in," she quipped, expressing excitement for the next chapter.

With Daheley’s exit, speculation begins regarding who will fill her shoes as the newsreader on the upcoming Sara Cox-led show. In the interim, Gary Davies has been taking the reins since Scott Mills' departure under controversial circumstances earlier this year.

The farewell has drawn warm responses from colleagues past and present. Zoe Ball, a former breakfast show host and long-time friend, praised Daheley, calling her a "class act," while incoming host Sara Cox lauded Daheley's remarkable career span, stating, "18 years, incredible, such a pro." Dermot O’Leary and other industry peers have also conveyed their good wishes, with travel presenter Ellie Brennan describing Daheley as a "brilliant, hilarious friend."

Cox, eager to begin her new role, has promised an exciting launch, with Tom Hanks set to be her first guest. The transition comes at a time of significant change for the BBC's flagship morning programming, setting the stage for a new era in breakfast radio.

As Tina Daheley prepares for her well-deserved rest from early mornings, listeners and colleagues alike will undoubtedly miss her presence and wit during their morning commutes.
