Daniel Harding Takes the Reins as Music Director of LA Philharmonic

Christopher Garcia - May 26, 2026 - 11

In a remarkable fusion of artistry and ambition, British conductor Daniel Harding has been appointed as the new music director of the Los Angeles Philharmonic, taking over from the esteemed Gustavo Dudamel in 2027. Harding, noted for his dynamic conducting style and innovative vision, also leads a dual life as a part-time pilot for Air France, a testament to his adventurous spirit both on the podium and in the skies.

At 50, Harding brings a wealth of experience to the LA Phil, having established himself as a leading figure on the global classical music scene. His journey began as a protégé of the legendary Sir Simon Rattle, who recognized Harding's potential when the young talent submitted a tape to the City of Birmingham Symphony Orchestra. Under Rattle's mentorship, Harding swiftly rose through the ranks, conducting prestigious orchestras such as the Berlin Philharmonic and serving as principal guest conductor of the London Symphony Orchestra for a decade.

Harding's appointment marks a new chapter for the LA Philharmonic, which has garnered acclaim for its unique cultural charisma and innovative programming in recent years. Esa-Pekka Salonen, the orchestra’s creative director, extolled Harding as "absolutely one of the most important conductors of our time," while chairman Jason Subotky applauded his "conducting genius" and commitment to community engagement.

Reflecting on his new role, Harding stated, "Making music with the magnificent LA musicians is both a thrill and an inspiration. There’s an extraordinary character within the orchestra that cannot be manufactured, and I come to California filled with excitement for what we will discover and create together." His former mentor, Dudamel, praised Harding's artistry and the deep connections he fosters with musicians.

Harding, a graduate of Chetham's School of Music in Manchester, has led a distinguished career that includes notable positions with the Orchestre de Paris, the Accademia Nazionale di Santa Cecilia, and the Swedish Radio Symphony Orchestra. In a notable twist, after turning 40, he embraced aviation, earning his pilot’s license and flying Airbus aircraft for Air France on medium-haul routes across Europe and North Africa.

"In flying, we identify all the threats and ensure we don't come near them; in music, it’s the opposite—we try to get as close as possible to catastrophe," Harding remarked in a 2025 interview with the New York Times, highlighting his unique perspective on both art forms.

As he prepares for this significant leadership role, Harding joins a distinguished legacy of British conductors who have influenced American orchestral music, including Sir John Barbirolli and Sir Georg Solti. With his dual passions igniting interest and curiosity, the music world eagerly anticipates the innovations he will bring to the Los Angeles Philharmonic.
