Chalmers embarked on her broadcasting journey at the tender age of 13, presenting Children's Hour on radio, and she quickly transitioned to television. Her early career included appearances in BBC's Children's Television Club, a precursor to the beloved Blue Peter. By the 1970s, she emerged as a household name, captivating audiences as the host of Wish You Were Here...?, a show lauded for showcasing luxurious holiday destinations and cultural experiences.

Known for her warmth and engaging style, Chalmers hosted various popular programs, including Come Dancing and daytime magazine shows such as Good Afternoon and Afternoon Plus. Her continued contributions to broadcasting earned her widespread acclaim, culminating in an OBE honor in 1994. In her later years, she also presented BBC Radio 2's morning show.

ITV issued a statement paying tribute to Chalmers' significant impact on British culture: "As the host of Wish You Were Here...? for four decades, Judith Chalmers became one of the most beloved faces of British broadcasting. Her indelible contribution made Judith a national treasure and a lasting favorite among our audience. We send our deepest sympathies to her family and friends at this very sad time."

Chalmers was married to sports presenter Neil Durden-Smith and was the proud mother of two sons. In 2008, one of her sons, TV presenter Mark Durden-Smith, honored her legacy by hosting a modern incarnation of her famed travel program titled Wish You Were Here…? Now & Then, which revisited iconic destinations featured in the original show.

Judith Chalmers’ passing marks the end of an era in television history, but her adventures and the joy she brought to viewers will resonate for years to come.
