From Roomba to 'Familiar': Colin Angle Introduces a New Era of Robotic Companionship

Colin Angle, the visionary behind the revolutionary Roomba, is stepping back into the spotlight with a groundbreaking new creation designed not for chores, but for companionship. This week, at the WSJ Future of Everything conference, Angle introduced the 'Familiar' — an innovative robotic pet aimed at fostering emotional connections within households.

Unlike its predecessor, which led to over 50 million robotic cleaners gracing the floors of homes globally, the Familiar is a dog-sized quadrupedal robot designed for autonomous interaction with family members. This charming creation, a blend reminiscent of a bear, a barn owl, and a golden retriever, is intended to evoke the mythos around faithful companions found in folklore. With an expressive face featuring movable eyebrows, ears, and eyes, the Familiar promises to be a companion rather than a commodity.

Angle described the Familiar as a “physically embodied AI system,” utilizing generative AI to engage with users and develop its own personality over time. "The next era of robotics is not just about dexterity or humanoid form — it’s about machines that can build and sustain human connection," Angle emphasized during an exclusive interview.

This venture is particularly poignant given the increasing recognition of the global loneliness epidemic. Angle envisions the Familiar serving in various roles, from child companionship to eldercare. By focusing on fostering genuine relationships, he aims to redefine the purpose of household robots.

Though the robot, internally codenamed Ami, won't hit the market until next year at the earliest, Angle suggests it will cost consumers approximately the same as traditional pet ownership. Key features remain under wraps, but the primary use cases are already identified: supporting families with children, providing companionship for the elderly, and enhancing interpersonal connections.

Reflecting on his extensive career spanning over three decades, Angle remarked, "Nothing we’ve done has led to this moment more than my initial vision for what artificial life could be. At last, thanks to advancements in technology, we’re ready to create Familiars." The founders of Familiar Machines, including Angle and iRobot veterans Ira Renfrew and Chris Jones, are committed to a responsible pursuit of robotics that enriches human life.

Promising to steer clear of the often-skeptical humanoid robot image, the Familiar will instead adopt a deliberately ambiguous design, allowing for personal connection without preconceived notions about its abilities. Further distancing itself from predecessors like chatbots, the Familiar will communicate primarily through nonverbal sounds, such as purring or soft meowing, steering clear of potential pitfalls associated with verbal interactions.

Ultimately, Angle concluded, "If this is merely a toy, we’ve failed. If it becomes a cherished creature in your world, then we have succeeded beyond our dreams." The Familiar represents not only a shift in Angle's robotic ambitions but a bold step into the future of companionship in our increasingly digital world.
